Garden Security Tips

Gardening is continuing to grow in popularity in the UK, but so is garden theft. Data from the Office of National Statistics revealed in England and Wales theft from outside the dwelling reached the highest level in 10 years in 2025. So, how do you keep your outdoor space and gardening equipment safe and secure? We provide some top tips.

What is the best security for a garden?

Securing your garden requires a multi-layered approach, securing the perimeter, locking down sheds and implementing lighting and an outdoor alarm.

Securing the perimeter

A high side and rear boundary combined with a low front boundary is recommended by UK Police forces. Specifically Fences or walls above 1.8m in your rear garden and under 1m in your front garden. This means that burglars can be easily seen at the front of your property and can’t easily access the back.

To create an extra deterrent, add spikey shrubs and bushes near fences, walls and windows and swap out slabs for gravel on drives and pathways, so you can hear anyone approaching your property.

Lock your gates

Make sure your garden gate is of equal height to your fencing and that it’s kept locked at all times.

How can I secure my garden gate?

Using a high-security weatherproof padlock can help to keep your garden secure all year round. A simple but effective security upgrade to help keep your garden gate locked and garden secure, whatever the weather.

For an added layer of security for your gate, a security bolt can ensure high quality protection against unwanted opportunists.

Secure your shed

Research from Aviva revealed 29% of UK residents have experienced an attempted or actual break-in to their shed or building. Despite this only 9% of people take measures to protect their shed or outbuilding.

How do you secure a shed from thieves?

Use a heavy-duty, weatherproof closed shackle padlock, such as the Squire SS50CS. Due to the shackle being almost completely covered, it’s extremely difficult to get cutting tools inside it. This high security padlock is LPCB SR2 and CEN 4, meaning it can withstand rigorous attack testing from cutting, sawing and drilling. The anti-corrosion cover also means it will withstand the unpredictable weather year-round.

For added security combine the padlock with a hasp and staple such as the Squire No.6 and No.8, which have an anti-corrosion finish and are built using hardened steel. With the capability to be used on single or double doors, these hasp and staple locks are ideal for keeping sheds, gates and outdoor storage boxes firmly locked.

If you’re securing bikes or expensive tools in your shed, make sure you’re anchoring them down and chaining them together. So that if thieves do manage to break into your shed they won’t be able to easily run off with anything valuable. The Squire Warrior Combi bundle is Sold Secure pedal cycle gold rated and features a ground/wall anchor, closed shackle combination padlock and chain and combi security cable providing reliable protection for larger items.

Lighting

An outdoor light is a must to ensure that anyone who approaches your property can be seen. Make sure you install the light in an out-of-reach area so it can’t be easily tampered with.

A Garden Alarm

To fully secure your garden, an intruder alarm system is recommended. Wireless sensors can detect movement near key entry points and raise an alarm. If you are using sensors, it is advised that you mount them 4-5 feet high to avoid false alarms from animals. You can also get dedicated shed alarms for added peace of mind.
