The hospitality sector is a high-risk environment for security, with frequent cash handling, employee turnover and high levels of public footfall. Including the food and drink industry, accommodation, and entertainment venues, hospitality accounts for 36% of businesses that fell victim to crime in 2023 (Hotel Management Network, 2024), making it vital to consider security measures that help to maintain security and safety for customers and employees.
Security may have an unexpected place in the hospitality sector, but it can help reduce stress across the premises, both during opening hours and out of hours. Here are some of the ways general security could be used across hospitality environments:
External shutters
Many street-facing venues use roller shutters to prevent break-ins overnight, offering an additional layer of protection for glass windows and doors. Shutters can be operated manually or automatically but heavily rely on employees activating them at the end of their shift.
Our IN9 BLE integrator can be installed into the shutter’s electrical operating system, allowing managers to operate it from their smartphone. Access can be granted and revoked remotely, enabling managers to maintain control and easily manage employee access rights. Automatic access schedules can also be created, reducing the need to regularly monitor and update permissions during shift handovers.
Restricted access areas
Restricted areas are common across hospitality sites, including stockrooms, utility cupboards and employee-only areas. With high levels of public footfall, it can be difficult to prevent unauthorised people from entering these spaces without additional security measures.
A simple “No Entry “sign is unlikely to deter security threats, but adding a padlock, such as our CP50, could be enough to discourage opportunistic thieves. The 50mm combination padlock features a hardened steel shackle and a four-wheel combination mechanism, making it difficult to pick, with over 10,000 possible combinations.
Employee lockers are also essential for storing valuables during shifts, so adequate protection is vital for a worry-free day at work. Our LN4 is a great padlock for securing personal belongings. With its compact, adaptable design for narrower staples, it offers a subtle and portable solution for workers. For those who don’t want to carry a key, our CP40 offers a similar level of security with a recodable four-wheel combination system.
Storing valuables and stock
In the food and drink industry, keeping stock safe is essential to the day-to-day running of the business. Many valuable assets are stored in containers or industrial fridge freezers and, while these containers are often located in staff-only areas, the assets themselves are rarely secured.
Our straight-shackle locks offer a high-security solution designed especially for commercial containers. Available as both a combination lock and a keyed lock, they provide a robust and reliable defence against forced entry, helping to ensure your stock and valuables remain secure when they are not actively monitored.
Our keyed alike service can be applied to most of our keyed padlocks, allowing cylinders across multiple locks to be configured to operate with a single key. This means employees only need to carry one key, rather than a full keyring, to access various containers across the site.
Industrial fridge freezers can also benefit from additional protection with our container locks, providing a physical barrier should alarms fail. They can be paired with our range of chains, which offer weather-resistant protection and provide a durable option where standard shackles may not be suitable.
Outbuildings and boundaries
Across hospitality, operations often expand beyond the four walls of the building. With outbuildings, refuse areas and delivery docks storing additional stock and equipment, it is equally important to consider external security.
Security chains such as our X4 chain, are ideal for external applications, with a heavy-duty cover designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Paired with our All Terrain range of padlocks, this solution is built to endure the elements while delivering uncompromised security all year round.
Other things to consider
General security is an effective way to deter against attacks, but it works best as part of a wider, comprehensive security strategy. Here are a few other ways to help protect your premises when nobody is on site:
- CCTV – View the entire premises remotely and record evidence if an incident occurs.
- Lighting – Keep entrance lighting on out of hours to help deter thieves.
- Alarm systems – Motion-detection alarms can alert owners to intruders, allowing them to respond quickly.
When investing in a security system for your hospitality premises, look for products that are independently certified. Accreditations such as Secured by Design, CEN, and LPCB provide confidence that products have been tested to recognised standards before you invest.
